Have you been thinking about adding some extra storage to your backyard with a shed? Is your home a part of a homeowner's association (HOA), and you're unsure of their guidelines for outdoor storage sheds? If so, don't worry, our team at Sun Rise Sheds has a few expert tips to help you speed along the process!
We understand how challenging working with your HOA can be, which is why we wanted to share a few tips with you to help smooth over the process as much as possible. Keep reading for more info, and when you're ready, give us a call to help pick out the best shed for you.
Review Your HOA's Community Rules
This may seem obvious, but one of the first things you'll want to do is get a copy of your HOA's guidelines and community rules. These are sometimes referred to as "covenants, conditions, and restrictions" if you're unsure what to ask for.
These HOA guidelines should specifically detail any height requirements or shed size restrictions, as well as any limitations you may have on location. Often, an HOA won't let you alter the landscaping around your home (trees, hedges, etc.) too much, so you may be looking at placing your storage shed around the pre-existing natural structures.
Talk to the HOA Board Members
If you're unsure of some of your HOA guidelines, we suggest sitting down and talking to one of the board members. This step may seem redundant, but working cooperatively with HOA leadership from the beginning will allow for a good rapport to grow between you and your HOA as a whole.
When you show that you're willing to work with their guidelines and restrictions, your HOA will likely be more flexible if something is done incorrectly during the shed construction process.
Your HOA can also help you understand any zoning restrictions that may come into play with your county or city. You can check out our previous blog post about permits and building codes in the Des Moines, Iowa area - we highly recommend reading up on that as well!
Be Ready With Your Storage Shed Design
Once you have all of the guidelines and regulations figured out, it's time to get the exact plans and blueprints for your storage shed project. Assuming you're purchasing a shed from Sun Rise Sheds, you can bring the requirements to us, and we'll help you with your custom shed and make sure it meets all of the community rules for your HOA.
When you have the plans and blueprints ready, you can present them directly to your HOA. And since you already checked with them for guidelines and any possible hiccups, the approval should go through right away! The faster the approval, the quicker you can get your custom outdoor storage shed constructed and put to good use.
