When it comes to choosing the right outdoor storage shed, deciding between shed siding options can be tricky. It's what you'll see every time you look at your new shed, so you want it to look good. At the same time, it's also what's protecting your shed from sun, rain, snow, and whatever the weather throws at it. Your choice of siding is going to impact the function and durability of your shed.
So what is the best material for your outdoor shed? In this blog, we go over significant factors that impact your decision, as well as the most common shed siding options and the pros and cons of each.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Shed Siding
Aesthetics
Plain and simple, the shed siding option you choose impacts the overall look of your building. Do you like the look of a classic wooden shed, or is a modern metal shed more your style? Consider color as well. Some types of shed siding come in various color options, while others are more limited. Most homeowners choose an outdoor shed that coordinates well with the style and color of their home.
Durability
Your outdoor shed is - don't forget - outdoors. You want a shed that's built to withstand the elements wherever you live. For example, if you live in a particularly wet climate, you may choose to avoid wood siding, which is susceptible to rot, or metal siding, which can be prone to rust. Most quality shed siding options have long-term warranties, so you know they are built to last.
Maintenance
While siding options for sheds are pretty durable in general, some require more maintenance than others to keep them looking and functioning at their best. Before deciding on your shed siding, consider how much painting, cleaning, and repairing you're prepared to do and factor that into your decision.
Budget
Of course, shed pricing is always a factor, but going with the cheapest siding option for your shed may not be the best choice if you want a shed that will last. At Sun Rise Sheds, we offer various shed siding options at different price points to fit your needs. We also offer financing options so you can get the shed of your dreams without breaking the bank.
Comparing Our Shed Siding Options
At Sun Rise Sheds, we offer three primary options for your shed siding: engineered wood siding, vinyl siding, and metal siding. Here is some information to help you decide which is best for you.
Engineered Wood Shed Siding
Engineered wood siding provides the look and beauty of natural wood with more durability and less maintenance. It's made of actual wood strands and fibers, bonded together with resin and pressed into boards that look remarkably similar to natural wood.
We use LP™ SmartSide™ panel siding as the standard option for our sheds. It has a 50-year product warranty and is treated with a unique solution that helps protect against fungal decay and termite damage. Our engineered wood siding comes in 24 different color options that will last for years before you need to repaint, although you should clean and inspect it annually.
Pros:
Cons:
Requires annual maintenance and may need to be repainted every 5-7 years
Vinyl Shed Siding
If you're looking for an outdoor shed that's practically maintenance-free, vinyl is the way to go. Vinyl is highly durable. You don't need to worry about rotting, cracking, flaking, or insect damage and it will stand up to even the harshest weather. Plus, it never needs to be painted.
Our vinyl siding carries a lifetime warranty and comes in four different colors, but note that it can be expensive to repair if it does get damaged.
Pros:
Metal Shed Siding
Metal is a high quality shed siding option that is also extremely low maintenance. Metal sheds are strong, durable, and resistant to weather, fire, and insects. However, they tend to look more industrial than wood or vinyl sheds, and you need to be cautious to protect them against rust.
We sheet the walls and roof of our sheds with OSB and use steel panels over that to prevent both heat and condensation in your shed. It's available in 24 colors and carries a 40-year warranty.
